Another favourite poem

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

Hot and Not

Current hots and nots…

HOT

Rocky Horror Picture Show:

After seeing it for the first time in years the other night, I’m loving it ALL over again! 90% of my love for RHPS revolves around Frank N. Furter. I swear I’m the world’s campiest hetero. I love Judy Garland, musicals, Rufus Wainwright, shitloads of glitter, over the top make-up, etc. etc.

Jelly Babies:

I crave these ALL the time. If I wasn’t on a healthy living kick I’d be eating bags of them. The best ones are the ones you buy by weight at David Jones. YUM.

Strawberries:

Now that the weather is getting cold, the strawberries are getting awesome. I have no interest in strawberries until this time of year, because they’re usually tasteless and expensive. Come June, I can’t get enough. The grocer near me sells 500g punnets really cheap, and they’re AMAZING.

Winter make-up shades:

MAC lipstick in ‘Media’

OPI polish in ‘Quarter of a Cent-cherry’

Nars lip pencil in ‘Damned’

Van Morrison:

Yes. Still. I’ve been listening to Van non-stop since about January. My favourite songs are ‘I’ll Be Your Lover, Too’, ‘Once in a Blue Moon’, ‘Beside You’, and ‘And it Stoned Me’.

Nikon D90:

I just got my first SLR camera, a Nikon D90, and it’s so darn cool. I’ve played around with it a bit, but I haven’t read the instructions or anything yet so I’m not familiar with all the stuff it does yet. I got the number of some guy who does cheap SLR tutorials and I’m thinking that might be a good idea.

Here a couple of the few pictures I’ve taken with it so far. Nothing very artistic but gives you an idea of the quality…

NOT

Ugg Boots:

This ‘trend’ was hANUS when it first happened circa 2002, and people just won’t let it go. Ugg boots in your own home = practical and warm. Ugg boots in public = one way ticket to boganhood. STOP. Just stop.

Anaemia:

I was diagnosed with severe anaemia in February and have been taking iron pills ever since but it takes a long time to recover from such low iron levels. I’ve enjoyed a delightful smorgasbord of symptoms such as being uber-pale(r than usual), dizziness, feeling like I live in altitude levels similar to those on top of Everest, and my favourite – blue lips and fingernails! Anyway, I thought I was making progress but I got a little bit slack with my pills when I ran out in Melbourne and didn’t get around to buying more so the shortness of breath and tiredness has decided to pay me a visit again to remind me why I shouldn’t be so shit at remembering to take the pills. I have repented. Double doses of iron for all!

Walks:

As part of my health kick, I started going for daily walks in February. I’ve missed about 10 days since then, but aside from those 10ish days I have gone every single day. I actually really enjoy it most of the time. I listen to music (and look nervously over my shoulder if it’s past 11pm) and think, and think up detailed choreography for imaginary musicals. But, as of a couple of weeks ago, my walks are NOT HOT. I still enjoy them, but what I’m getting at here is that it’s COLD, girlfriend. It’s getting freezing, and for an anaemic little Queenslander such as myself, that’s challenging. Still doing them, still loving it, no longer sweating or getting flushed at all. Come with me! I love having walking buddies!

Procrastination:

I have been writing my thesis. I still struggle with procrastination, and being paralysed by my own perfectionism/lack of confidence, BUT I have words. I’m stepping away from the section I’ve been working on for a while because it’s beginning to feel a bit stagnant. Hopefully starting on the other section with refresh me a bit!

Sport:

What with the World Cup and Origin, all I seem to hear about lately is sport and I just do not give a rat’s silky little ear. It’s just so BORING. Please, can we talk about something else?! I enjoy playing some sports (ok, ONE sport, but still) and I enjoy the olympics, but that’s it. This rat is begging you to shut up about anything to do with watching men run around kicking a ball. Or the rat will kick YOU in the ball :)

Sex and the City 2:

One word: fail. Lucy and I saw it last week. We knew it’d be awful, but we didn’t know HOW awful. The highlight of the film was the lolly bag that Lucy bought and that I stole a few jelly beans from. MMM… jelly beans. Oh yeah, so S&tC 2 sucked and was way too overtly preachy. I loved the show, but let’s just leave it alone now. When Liza Minelli was dancing to single ladies *cringe*, Luce leaned over and whispered to me ‘she’s like 80 and she’s not wearing any pants’. That pretty much says it all. Aidan was still sxc though, so that was something.

Today, I am Beth

I’m sick. Caught it from the sick baby I was looking after. I’m just like Beth in Little Women when she comes back from looking after the sick Hummel baby. I’m slumped over the piano murmuring “I feel so strange”. At least it’s not Scarlet Fever though!

10 year plan

Now I’m twenty three, and I listen to a lot of Van Morrison.

When I’m twenty-four, I’ll finally learn the periodic table.

When I’m twenty-five, I’ll buy more new stationery than is necessary.

When I’m twenty-six, I’ll buy myself jonquils as a housewarming gift.

When I’m twenty-seven, I’ll make awkward small-talk at my 10 year high school reunion.

When I’m twenty-eight, I’ll think I see you on the street but when I get closer I’ll realise I was wrong.

When I’m twenty-nine, I’ll rediscover this blog and laugh at what a wanker I sound like.

When I’m thirty, I’ll feel really goddamn old.

When I’m thirty-one, I will have forgotten the periodic table.

When I’m thirty-two, I’ll still remember you.

Seven Deadly Sins

SLOTH – How do you relax?

Sometimes I just sit on the couch in my pyjamas and surf the net/watch a DVD/read a book, but more often I get dressed and go out by myself and sit in Starbucks with a frappuccino, read magazines in Borders, and browse around the shops. Long drives with a good CD also do the trick!

GLUTTONY – What can’t you get enough of, even though it’s bad for you?

Chips. Chips. Chips. My FAVOURITE food ever. Which I only eat a couple of times a year. Sad, innit?
GREED – What do you get greedy for?

Money. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t such a mercenary, materialistic person. But a lot of my enjoyment in life revolves around having money – movies, drinks, petrol, shopping, pedicures, etc. – so I really like to have some. One day I hope to have lots. LOTS and LOTS.
ENVY – What makes you green?

Gosh. This one is probably my worst sin. I’m jealous of pretty much everyone! I’m jealous of people who are normal/don’t have the same whacko brain issues I have. Jealous of people who are skinny/hot/smart/kind. You name it really. Jealous of people with lots of money. But mainly the first one. Just people who are SANE! lol.
LUST – What does it for you?

Intelligence. Charisma. And certain gay men hah :’(
PRIDE – What are you inordinately proud of?

That’s an interesting one. I’ve never really thought about it. I guess I’m proud of the way I’ve coped with the past year in some ways. I’m proud of Ruby because I feel like I contributed to her development. I’m proud of Cru for being so brave throughout his illnesses. I’m proud of my perseverance in my quest for better health, so far at least!
WRATH – What makes you angry?

Big issues that make me angry are the state government’s and city council’s lack of respect for Brisbane’s heritage and environment. Irresponsible pet ownership.
Little things: Goddamn tailgaters OR people who drive at about 30kms. People who offer me chicken/fish. VEGETARIAN, fool. It means I don’t eat animals. Some days pretty much everything makes me angry, and that makes me angry at myself.

What Better Motivation Than Spandex?

First netball game of the season is this Saturday. Yep, THIS Saturday. Oh it shocked me too. It starts a bit earlier this year, and that combined with the fact that three training sessions have been rained out means that I have trained ONCE (as in one time) before our first game. This troubles me.

Holiday kilos WILL NOT budge and I’m 3kgs heavier than usual. Green spandex in 2 days. Again, troubled. I’ve been eating healthily the past few weeks, but it didn’t seem to be enough. Last week I hit the gym once, had training Monday night, and have been to the gym twice this week so far. I’m currently what the medicos call RETARDIOVASCULAR. Dear god, why, why spandex? I miss the days of junior netty, cotton, so much sweet, sweet cotton. Loose cotton, breathing cotton. Quite apart from my appearance, I’m concerned about my stamina. I’ll report back on how game 1 goes :/

Anyways, unfit + 3 extra kgs + spandex = troubled Suz, Suz taking a moment etc.

(I’ve been watching a lot of Ally McBeal, please forgive any random references)

What else?

French film festival is going really well. Have loved 2 outta 3 so far, 3 more to go.

My dear Lucy has returned to our shores in all her glory and we have resumed our regime of pointless phone calls, pizza, and hypothetical trips to the gym x x x

I have a new video camera which I luuuurve and will post a video or two as soon as I record something worthwhile (don’t hold your breath).

Oh, and my theme song (for all you non-McBeal fans, it’s what you play in your head to make you feel better or more confident in times of stress) is ‘Can’t Get Enough of You Baby’ by Smashmouth. What’s yours?
